Tamil film industry strike postponed after government talks

The Tamil film industry is facing a potential total shutdown starting September 1 due to a dispute over theatrical release windows and OTT streaming terms.

The Tamil Film Producers Council and the Tamil Nadu Active Producers Association announced a halt to all new film releases, shootings, and post-production to protest terms set by the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association and the Distributors Association. Theatre owners are demanding a written commitment guaranteeing a mandatory eight-week theatrical window before any film can be released on OTT platforms. Producers argue these conditions were imposed without consultation and deviate from practices in neighboring states such as Andhra Pradesh, Kerala, and Karnataka.

In response to the planned shutdown, the Film Employees’ Federation of South India (FEFSI) urged producers to reconsider, warning that a work stoppage would cause a “major shock” to the industry and disproportionately impact the livelihoods of thousands of daily-wage workers and technicians. FEFSI called for the Tamil Nadu government to mediate a tripartite discussion.

Following a meeting on August 26 with Minister for Information and Publicity A Rajmohan, producers have indefinitely postponed the September 1 strike. The government has promised to facilitate tripartite discussions between producers, distributors, and theatre owners once the legislative session concludes. The minister also assured producers that their memorandum would be brought to the attention of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
