Tamil film producers postpone September strike after government intervention

Tamil film producers have indefinitely postponed a planned strike scheduled for September 1 following assurances from the Tamil Nadu government. The strike, announced by the Tamil Film Producers Council (TFPC) and the Tamil Film Active Producers Association (TFAPA), was intended to halt all new film releases, ongoing shoots, and post-production work.

The dispute arose from a conflict between producers, distributors, and theatre owners regarding the timing of digital releases. The Tamil Nadu Film Distributors Federation and the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners Association had stipulated that theatrical screenings would only be permitted for films that provide written assurance of an eight-week window before being released on OTT platforms. Producers argued this was a unilateral decision that deviated from established industry practices.

Following a meeting on August 26 with Minister for Information and Publicity A Rajmohan, the government promised to facilitate tripartite discussions between producers, distributors, and theatre owners once the legislative session concludes. The minister assured producers that their memorandum would be brought to the attention of Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay.
