Tamil Nadu allocates Rs 42 crore for monsoon flood preparedness

The Tamil Nadu government has allocated Rs 42 crore to the Water Resources Department for monsoon preparedness in Chennai and four other vulnerable districts: Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Cuddalore. The funds will support desilting and maintenance at 202 locations, including the Adyar and Cooum rivers, to improve the carrying capacity of waterways and mitigate flooding risks.

This preventive action follows warnings regarding a developing ‘Super El Nino’ in the Pacific. Weather analysts suggest the phenomenon could reach intensities seen in 1997 and 2015, potentially intensifying by November. Such conditions may lead to severe weather disruptions and increased rainfall during the northeast monsoon, which typically peaks between October and December, raising concerns for flood-prone areas in Chennai and its suburbs.
