Tamil Nadu water management and monsoon preparedness

The Tamil Nadu government has initiated large-scale water management and flood preparedness measures in response to low reservoir levels and potential weather disruptions.

On August 17, the state launched a Rs 500-crore water body restoration programme to desilt 10,185 inlet canals and restore 809 lakes and ponds. This initiative aims to increase storage capacity and improve groundwater recharge ahead of the Northeast Monsoon. The drive follows reports that the state’s 90 reservoirs were at only 37.05% capacity, with the vital Mettur reservoir holding 46.30%.

Following these efforts, the government allocated an additional Rs 42 crore specifically for monsoon flood preparedness in Chennai and the districts of Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Cuddalore. These funds are designated for the maintenance of 202 locations, including the Adyar and Cooum rivers. These preventive actions are heightened by warnings of a developing ‘Super El Nino’ in the Pacific, which weather analysts suggest could intensify rainfall during the October to December monsoon period.
