Tamil Nadu and Puducherry face moderate rain and thunderstorms through August 16

The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has forecast a period of unsettled weather across Tamil Nadu and Puducherry, with moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning expected to continue through August 16.

A low-pressure trough along the North Tamil Nadu coast is driving the weather activity. This is expected to bring gusty winds reaching speeds of 40–50 kmph and potential thunderstorms. An orange alert has been issued for six districts—Ariyalur, Cuddalore, Kallakurichi, Mayiladuthurai, Tiruvannamalai, and Villupuram—due to the risk of intense rainfall. A yellow alert covers several other areas, including Chennai and Madurai.

Rainfall activity is predicted to be most pronounced in the Western Ghats and northern coastal districts around August 12 and 13. While much of the state will see relief from heat, northern interior regions may experience higher temperatures and increased humidity, with maximum temperatures potentially rising by up to 3 degrees Celsius above normal.

In Chennai, recent showers have already caused waterlogging and traffic disruptions. The forecast suggests light to moderate evening or night showers will persist. Additionally, fishermen have been advised to exercise caution due to squally winds expected along the Tamil Nadu coast and the Gulf of Mannar.
