Tamil Nadu announces ₹2,997 crore healthcare and welfare package
The Tamil Nadu government has announced a comprehensive ₹2,997 crore healthcare package and several social welfare measures. A central component is the expansion of the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, which will increase the annual medical coverage limit from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh. Additionally, a new insurance scheme will provide free medical treatment to all residents aged 70 and above, regardless of their income level.
To bolster medical infrastructure and workforce, the state is allocating ₹351 crore to create 6,098 additional seats in medical, nursing, and paramedical courses. This includes the establishment of seven new government nursing colleges and a 400-bed multi-specialty hospital in Perambalur. The ‘Nalam 360’ initiative will also provide 14 basic annual diagnostic tests to residents aged 30 and older through 1,257 government facilities.
Beyond healthcare, the government is increasing the milk procurement price from ₹38 to ₹41 per litre and raising the government incentive from ₹3 to ₹5 per litre, a move expected to benefit over 3.16 lakh milk producers.
