Tamil Nadu state welfare and social initiatives

The Tamil Nadu government has introduced several large-scale welfare and social development initiatives.

Initial measures focused on healthcare and infrastructure, including a ₹2,997 crore package. This included expanding the Chief Minister’s Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme to increase annual coverage from ₹5 lakh to ₹25 lakh, providing free medical treatment for residents aged 70 and above, and allocating ₹351 crore to create over 6,000 new medical and nursing education seats. The state also implemented the ‘Nalam 360’ diagnostic initiative and increased milk procurement prices to benefit local producers.

Subsequent announcements expanded the scope of state welfare to include specific support for minority communities. These initiatives include covering undergraduate tuition fees for Muslim female students under the government quota, expanding Waqf Board scholarships for girls in secondary school, and establishing a new arts and science college for minority women in Chennai. Economic support for these communities also includes a ₹100-crore revolving fund for interest-free loans to develop commercial assets on religious properties, alongside job training programs for 10,000 minority youths.
