India: FCRA Bill referred to JPC as Tamil Nadu opposes NEET and FCRA
The Indian Parliament has referred the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Amendment Bill, 2026, to a 31-member Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) for detailed scrutiny. The committee, comprising 21 members from the Lok Sabha and 10 from the Rajya Sabha, is expected to submit its report by the first week of the 2026 Winter Session. The referral follows intense opposition from parties including the Congress and Samajwadi Party, who allege the bill targets minority communities and NGOs. The government has denied these claims, stating the bill aims to ensure transparency in foreign funding.
Simultaneously, the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly has passed resolutions opposing both the FCRA Amendment Bill and the National Eligibility cum Entrance Test (NEET). Regarding NEET, the state government argues the entrance exam disadvantages rural, economically backward, and Tamil-medium students while fueling an expensive coaching industry. The assembly has urged the central government to abolish the uniform entrance system and instead base medical admissions on Class 12 examination marks. The BJP has opposed the anti-NEET move, while other parties like the DMK and AIADMK supported the resolution.
