Tamil Nadu calls for Supreme Court contempt case over Karnataka's Mekedatu dam work
Amma Makkal Munnetra Kazhagam (AMMK) leader T. T. V. Dhinakaran urged the Tamil Nadu government to file a contempt petition against Karnataka for continuing construction on the Mekedatu dam project despite a Supreme Court verdict and directions of the Cauvery Water Management Authority. He said a farmers' delegation that visited the site confirmed ongoing survey and construction activities.
Dhinakaran also urged Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and press the Union government to block any further approval for the dam, arguing that the project threatens Tamil Nadu’s water security and violates the court’s orders. He accused the Karnataka Congress government of ignoring the ruling and the Tamil Nadu Congress of making contradictory promises.
The demand highlights the long‑standing inter‑state Cauvery water dispute and the political tensions between the two neighboring states over the proposed reservoir.
