Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay Marks Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, Calls for Tamil Unity

On May 18, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay used his X account to mark Mullivaikkal Remembrance Day, a ceremony observed worldwide by the Tamil diaspora to remember the final phase of the Sri Lankan civil war in 2009. He said the memory of Mullivaikkal would stay in his heart and pledged continued support for the rights of Tamil communities “living across the seas.”

Vijay’s post also paid tribute to the late LTTE leader Velupillai Prabhakaran, describing him as a figure of “motherly love” for Sri Lankan Tamils. He reminded followers that the LTTE remains banned in India due to its role in the 1991 assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. United Nations estimates place civilian deaths in the conflict’s last weeks between 40,000 and 70,000. Vijay’s statements aim to reinforce solidarity with Sri Lankan Tamils and keep attention on historical injustices.
