Tamil Nadu CM Vijay orders monsoon preparedness measures
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay has ordered state departments to complete all pending precautionary works ahead of the northeast monsoon. During a high-level review meeting at the Secretariat, Vijay evaluated preparedness across Chennai and the districts of Kancheepuram, Tiruvallur, Cuddalore, Villupuram, and Tiruvannamalai.
To manage potential urban flooding, the Chief Minister directed the desilting of canals and the removal of water hyacinth from waterbodies. He also instructed the electricity department to replace hazardous power cables and reinforce weak poles to prevent electrocution. A joint framework has been established involving the Greater Chennai Corporation, police, fire services, health, and Chennai Metro Rail to ensure coordinated relief operations.
Emergency measures include pre-positioning high-capacity dewatering pumps, rescue boats, and heavy machinery in vulnerable zones. Additionally, schools and community halls are being prepared as relief centers, supported by community kitchens to provide meals and safe drinking water.
