Tamil Nadu courts intervene in two separate minor sexual assault cases
In Coimbatore, police obtained a court order to keep two suspects, Karthi (33) and Mohan (30), in custody for three days while investigating the rape and murder of a 10‑year‑old girl whose body was found on a beach. Both men were arrested after the investigation linked them to the crime, and the court approved further custodial interrogation.
Separately, the Chennai High Court granted permission for a 16‑year‑old girl, who was the victim of sexual assault, to undergo a safe termination of her 30‑week pregnancy. The court emphasized that abortion is a woman’s personal bodily right and directed the hospital to form a medical board to assess the procedure’s safety, despite the statutory limit of 24 weeks.
Both cases highlight judicial responses to severe sexual‑offence crimes involving minors in Tamil Nadu.
