Tamil Nadu faces heavy rain and thunderstorms across ten districts
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Chennai has issued a forecast of heavy rainfall for ten districts of Tamil Nadu on Tuesday, June 9, 2026. The affected districts include Nilgiris, Coimbatore, Tiruppur, Dindigul, Theni, Kanniyakumari, Dharmapuri, Salem, Erode and the hilly areas of Tirunelveli. Heavy rain will be accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds reaching speeds of up to 50 km/h.
Isolated places in Vellore, Ranipet, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chennai and Chengalpattu are expected to receive moderate rain with thunderstorms. Despite the rain, the weather department warns that heat-related discomfort may persist, with temperatures up to three degrees Celsius above normal and maximums around 39‑40 °C, especially in north‑coastal and interior parts of the state. Residents are advised to stay hydrated, avoid prolonged sun exposure and take caution during thunderstorm activity.
