Tamil Nadu faces potential 3°C temperature rise due to El Niño

Tamil Nadu may face significantly higher summer temperatures in 2027 due to an exceptionally strong El Niño phenomenon in the Pacific Ocean. Forecasts from the World Meteorological Organization suggest sea surface temperatures in the central and eastern tropical Pacific could reach 3.7°C above normal by late 2026.

Experts note that the impact on the region will be influenced by both El Niño and broader climate change, which has led to long-term ocean warming. Scientists warn that temperatures in parts of the state could rise by as much as 3°C above normal if the phenomenon coincides with persistent hot and dry conditions.

The anticipated heat poses risks to public health, particularly for outdoor workers, senior citizens, and vulnerable populations. Increased temperatures are expected to strain water resources, raise electricity demand, and exacerbate the urban heat-island effect in cities like Chennai. Authorities are advised to strengthen heat-action measures, including providing shade, ensuring access to drinking water, and issuing timely health advisories.
