Tamil Nadu forecasts storms and strong winds as temperatures climb
India's Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) issued a weather alert for Tamil Nadu, predicting thunderstorms, gusty winds up to 50 km/h and moderate to heavy rainfall in several districts over the next few days. The forecast covers Tiruchirappalli, Perambalur, Ariyalur, Namakkal, Salem and, on Tuesday, additional districts such as Kallakurichi, Thanjavur, Tiruvannamalai and Mayiladuthurai. Residents are advised to stay alert for possible damage from high winds and heavy rain.
Temperatures have surged after a period of cooler weather, with maximums reaching about 39‑40 °C in places like Nagapattinam, Madurai and Tiruchirappalli. The heat combined with favorable atmospheric conditions may generate thunderclouds and localized heavy downpours. Chennai is expected to see partly cloudy skies with limited rain, while the Union Territory of Puducherry and nearby Karaikal experienced similar high temperatures.
Authorities have warned the public to take precautions against the stormy conditions and to monitor updates from the weather department.
