Tamil Nadu launches Rs 500-crore water restoration drive amid low reservoir levels

The Tamil Nadu government is launching a Rs 500-crore water body restoration programme starting August 17. The initiative aims to prepare for the Northeast Monsoon expected in October by desilting 10,185 inlet canals and restoring 809 water bodies, including lakes and ponds. The project, directed by Chief Minister Vijay under the ‘Viksit Bharat’ scheme, seeks to increase storage capacity, improve groundwater recharge, and prevent flooding by ensuring smooth rainwater flow.

This restoration drive comes amid concerns regarding low water levels across the state. Data from the Water Resources Department indicates that the combined storage of Tamil Nadu’s 90 reservoirs is currently at only 37.05% capacity, a significant decrease compared to the same period last year. Most reservoirs are below 50% capacity, with the Mettur reservoir—a vital source for irrigation—holding only 46.30% of its capacity. While drinking water needs are currently being met, officials noted that balancing supply and demand is becoming increasingly difficult, particularly in downstream districts.
