Tamil Nadu government moves on regulator appointments, university V‑C committees and online land registration

The Tamil Nadu government has opened applications to fill the Chairperson, Member and Member (Legal) posts of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Regulatory Commission (TNERC) after all three statutory positions became vacant following resignations and term expiries.

The state has also proposed expanding vice‑chancellor search committees for its universities from three to five members. The suggestion drew mixed reactions: the PMK party and the Tamil Nadu Government College Teachers Association warned it could complicate appointments and may require statutory amendments, while the Madras University Teachers Association supported the move and called for inclusion of a university academic council representative.

In a separate administration drive, the government announced that the online “Anywhere Registration” system for property transactions will become mandatory on 17 August 2026. The platform will allow 24/7 document submission, biometric verification and instant digital delivery, aiming to eliminate bribery and reduce congestion at sub‑registrar offices.

The DMK has criticised Industries Minister S Keerthana for allegedly using students at a government girls’ school for a social‑media video, publicly humiliating a minor. A complaint has been filed with the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights, alleging violations of child‑rights laws and the Constitution.
