Tamil Nadu MBBS admission cut-offs expected to rise

Medical admissions for the 2026-27 academic year in Tamil Nadu are set to see a significant rise in cut-off marks due to an increase in high-scoring NEET-UG candidates. Health Minister K. Arunraj announced that the state rank list for MBBS and BDS admissions has been released, with online counselling for the general category scheduled to begin on August 13. Special category students, including those under the 7.5% reservation for government school students, will undergo offline counselling on the same day.

Experts anticipate that general category cut-offs for government medical college seats could increase by 13 to 40 marks. For the 7.5% reservation quota, the increase may reach up to 49 marks. This surge in competition is attributed to a sharp rise in students scoring above 600 marks compared to the previous year.

A total of 9,999 MBBS seats are available this year, including 5,600 in government medical colleges and 4,005 in private medical colleges. The state has added approximately 850 MBBS seats despite some colleges being granted deemed university status. Additionally, around 2,000 BDS seats will be filled through the counselling process. The government is also conducting a mandatory five-year review of the 7.5% reservation scheme to determine its future implementation.
