Tamil Nadu Minister Says No Brick Will Be Laid for Karnataka's Mekedatu Dam

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister K.A. Sengottaiyan affirmed that Karnataka will not be permitted to lay even a single brick for the proposed Mekedatu balancing reservoir while C. Joseph Vijay remains Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu. He cited past visits by Tamil Nadu leaders—such as J. Jayalalithaa, O. Panneerselvam, C.Ve. Shanmugam and Duraimurugan—who took the Cauvery water dispute to the courts, and said the current CM is now representing the state’s interests.

Sengottaiyan also announced that the Tamil Nadu government has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking Union support for the project and reiterated opposition to the Mekedatu scheme, linking it to broader concerns such as the NEET examination, metro rail proposals for Coimbatore and Madurai, and a disqualification case involving AIADMK MLAs. He stressed the administration’s commitment to balanced development and legal avenues to protect Tamil Nadu’s water rights.
