Tamil Nadu DMK MLA Markandayan's bail hearing set for July 22

Vilathikulam DMK MLA G. V. Markandayan was arrested by the Thoothukudi District Crime Branch on July 20 after a public meeting in Kovilpatti where he allegedly threatened Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay, saying the MLA would "break your bones" inside the Assembly. He was remanded to 15 days of judicial custody and placed in Palayamkottai Central Prison. The bail application was admitted and a hearing is scheduled for July 22 in Thoothukudi.

The arrest has sparked political backlash. DMK chief M. K. Stalin condemned the move as a targeting of opposition leaders by the ruling TVK government and warned of consequences. Minister Vanni and BJP state chief Narayanan Thirupathy denounced Markandayan's remarks as incitement to violence. Charges filed include sections 351(3), 352 and 353(2) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The case is being watched for its implications ahead of upcoming state elections.
