Tamil Nadu postpones Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme launch

The Tamil Nadu government has postponed the launch of the Thaimaman Gold Ring Scheme, which provides one-gram gold rings to newborn babies in government hospitals. Originally scheduled for mid-September, the inauguration has been delayed due to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s upcoming foreign visit and meetings with alliance partners. Despite the delay, officials clarified that the scheme will be considered effective from June 22.

The program, inspired by the “Thaimaman Seer” tradition, has an allocated budget of approximately Rs 755.83 crore. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation will manage the procurement of hallmark-certified pure gold rings. With nearly 4.2 lakh deliveries occurring annually in state government health facilities, the scheme aims to support a significant portion of the state's newborn population.

In addition to the scheme delay, Health Minister KG Arunraj announced several healthcare reforms. These include the establishment of a bone marrow registry to facilitate transplants, a ban on using plastic for serving food in government hospitals, and new measures to address rodent issues and improve patient feedback mechanisms within public healthcare infrastructure.
