Tamil Nadu postpones Thaimaman gold ring scheme launch
Overview
The Tamil Nadu government has postponed the launch of the ‘Thaimaman Thanga Mothiram Thittam’ scheme, which was originally scheduled for mid-September 2026. The delay is attributed to Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s upcoming foreign visit and scheduled meetings with alliance partners. Despite the postponement, officials clarified that the scheme will be considered effective from June 22.
The welfare initiative, inspired by the ‘Thaimaman Seer’ tradition, provides 1-gram, 22-carat gold rings to newborns in government hospitals. The Tamil Nadu Medical Services Corporation will manage the procurement of the hallmark-certified rings. The program has an allocated budget of approximately Rs 755.83 crore to support a significant portion of the state's newborn population, with nearly 4.2 lakh deliveries occurring annually in state government health facilities.
In a related announcement, Health Minister KG Arunraj introduced several healthcare reforms, including the establishment of a bone marrow registry, a ban on using plastic for serving food in government hospitals, and new measures to address rodent issues and patient feedback mechanisms.
