Tamil Nadu records highest road accidents in India for fourth year

Tamil Nadu recorded the highest number of road accidents in India for the fourth consecutive year in 2025. According to data presented in the Lok Sabha by Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, the state reported 71,387 accidents and 18,505 fatalities.

While the number of crashes has increased steadily from 64,105 in 2022, Tamil Nadu maintained a comparatively lower fatality-to-accident ratio of approximately 26% compared to other major states like Uttar Pradesh (55.47%) and Maharashtra (49%). Experts suggest this lower ratio may be due to better access to medical facilities and faster emergency response times.

With 3.76 crore registered vehicles, Tamil Nadu has the third-largest vehicle population in the country. To combat rising numbers, the central government has introduced measures such as mandatory speed-limiting devices for transport vehicles. Road safety specialists continue to emphasize the need for stricter speed controls and addressing driver fatigue.
