Road accident trends in Tamil Nadu

Overview

Tamil Nadu has recorded the highest number of road accidents in India for four consecutive years. Data presented to the Lok Sabha indicates that in 2025, the state reported 71,387 accidents and 18,505 fatalities. Despite the rising number of crashes, the state maintains a lower fatality-to-accident ratio compared to states like Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, which experts attribute to better medical access and emergency response times.

Recent specific incidents highlight the ongoing danger on regional roads. In Maduranthagam, three college students died after their car overturned on the Chennai-Trichy National Highway due to a tyre burst. In Dindigul, four children were killed by a speeding vehicle, and in Tiruvallur, three family members died in an autorickshaw collision with a truck. In response to the deaths of the children in Dindigul, Chief Minister Vijay announced a solatium of Rs three lakh for their families.
