Tamil Nadu to ban mobile phones in major temples from Sept 1

The Hindu Religious and Charitable Endowments (HR&CE) Department has announced a complete ban on mobile phones in all major temples across Tamil Nadu, effective September 1. The measure aims to preserve the sanctity of places of worship and prevent unauthorized photography and videography, particularly of deities and sanctum sanctorums.

To facilitate the ban, temple administrations have 20 days to establish secure mobile phone deposit facilities. Devotees will be required to deposit their devices at designated counters for a nominal fee of ₹5, with receipts issued through the Integrated Temple Management System (ITMS). These facilities will be monitored via CCTV to ensure safety.

Additionally, the department has introduced stricter protocols for visits by VIPs, including actors and political leaders. Temple authorities must notify the HR&CE Commissioner at least one day in advance for scheduled visits, providing details on the time and the number of accompanying persons. These guidelines are intended to ensure that prominent visits do not disrupt the movement or darshan of ordinary devotees.
