Tamil Nadu to establish safe houses and special law against honor killings

The Tamil Nadu government has announced plans to establish safe houses in every district to protect individuals and families at risk of honor killings, caste violence, and related attacks. Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu announced the initiative in the State Assembly, noting that the shelters aim to provide safety, help survivors rebuild their lives, and support legal battles.

In addition to the safe houses, the government intends to enact a special law to prevent and punish honor killings. This move follows recommendations from a committee led by retired judge K. N. Basha. The government has extended the committee's tenure to allow for further consultations with government officials, political parties, and other stakeholders. Once the final report is submitted, the state will move toward framing a dedicated legal framework to address these crimes.

Activists have described the safe houses as a lifeline for women facing harassment and difficulty pursuing justice. However, some advocates have urged the government to ensure that these facilities are used strictly for protection rather than for persuading couples to end their marriages, and have called for court oversight to guarantee the safety of those seeking help.
