Tamil Nadu honour killing legislative response

The death of Praveen Kumar, a 23-year-old Dalit man in Tamil Nadu who succumbed to machete wounds following a relationship, has triggered demands for new legislation to combat honour killings. While police stated the motive was not an honour killing because the victim and the accused belonged to the same community, activists from organizations such as the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK) and the Tamil Nadu Untouchability Eradication Front (TNUEF) disputed this, arguing that economic inequality and romantic relationships can drive such violence.

In response to these calls, the Tamil Nadu government announced plans to establish safe houses in every district to protect individuals at risk of caste violence and honour killings. Social Justice Minister Vanni Arasu stated these shelters are intended to provide safety and support for survivors. Additionally, the state intends to enact a special law to prevent and punish honour killings, following recommendations from a committee led by retired judge K. N. Basha. The government has extended the committee's tenure to facilitate further consultations before framing a dedicated legal framework.
