Tamil Nadu CM moves resolution for Tamil in High Court and new Secretariat

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay has introduced two major administrative and legislative initiatives in the state Assembly. First, the Assembly unanimously passed a resolution urging the Union Government to recognize Tamil as the principal language of the Madras High Court. The resolution seeks to establish frameworks for filing petitions, making oral arguments, and delivering judgments, decrees, and orders in Tamil. This move revives a long-standing demand, noting that while other states like Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh use Hindi in their High Courts, previous attempts to implement Tamil in the Madras High Court were declined by the Supreme Court.

Second, the Chief Minister announced plans to construct a new integrated Assembly-cum-Secretariat complex in Chennai at an estimated cost of ₹1,200 crore. The proposed 20 lakh square foot facility aims to consolidate various government departments into a single modern administrative center, potentially relocating operations from the historic Fort St George campus to improve coordination and efficiency. Additionally, the government announced plans to develop a Tamil Nadu Olympic City and a Motor Sports City in Chennai to bolster the state's sports infrastructure.
