Nearly 2,000 students, teachers, and pupils across several Indonesian provinces fell ill in suspected food poisoning outbreaks linked to the government’s flagship Free Nutritious Meals (MBG) program. The incidents, occurring between September 1 and September 3, were reported in Aceh, West Sumatra, South Sulawesi, Central Java, and East Java.

In Rembang, Central Java, 752 students and 25 teachers at State Senior High School 1 Lasem experienced symptoms such as nausea and vomiting. In Sidoarjo, East Java, approximately 730 people, primarily students at the Manbaul Hikam Islamic boarding school, were affected. The Indonesian Commission for Child Protection (KPAI) described the widespread incidents as a serious alarm regarding the program's risk management systems.

In response, Coordinating Minister for Food Zulkifli Hasan announced plans to evaluate the distribution system and replace negligent staff within two months. The National Nutrition Agency (BGN) has suspended operations at the Kalitengah Nutrition Fulfillment Service Unit (SPPG) in Sidoarjo pending investigation. Meanwhile, the head of the Manbaul Hikam school has proposed that the program be managed internally by institutions to ensure better oversight and food safety.
