Tanger Med commissions Africa’s largest floating solar plant
Tanger Med has commissioned a 13 MWp floating photovoltaic plant on the Oued Rmel dam reservoir in Morocco. Described as Africa’s largest operational floating solar plant, the installation covers approximately 72,870 square meters across three floating islands and utilizes more than 22,000 solar panels.
The project, led by a consortium including H2air PX, EnergyDesign, Seaflex, and Profloating, is designed to supply renewable electricity to the Tanger Med port complex. It is expected to produce nearly 20 GWh of electricity annually, helping to reduce the facility's carbon footprint by approximately 14,000 tonnes of CO2 per year.
Engineers addressed significant technical challenges regarding water level fluctuations, which can vary by up to 44 meters, by implementing specialized anchoring and mooring systems. Beyond energy production, the floating structure is intended to mitigate water stress by reducing reservoir evaporation by up to 30% through shading.
