Floating solar energy implementation in North Africa

Overview

North African nations are implementing floating solar photovoltaic technology to generate renewable energy and mitigate water evaporation.

In Morocco, Tanger Med commissioned a 13 MWp floating solar plant on the Oued Rmel dam reservoir. The project, which utilizes over 22,000 solar panels, is designed to supply electricity to the Tanger Med port complex and is expected to reduce reservoir evaporation by up to 30% through shading.

Following this, Tunisia’s Ministry of Agriculture, Water Resources and Fisheries launched a study to install a pilot floating photovoltaic system at the Sidi El Barrak dam. This initiative, part of the ‘TECH-EAU’ project in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, aims to evaluate the feasibility of using solar panels to limit water loss caused by sun and wind exposure.
