Tangier Mayor Mounir Laymouri arrested amid electoral fraud investigation
Mounir Laymouri, the Mayor of Tangier and a regional official for the Authenticity and Modernity Party (PAM), was arrested at Tangier Ibn Battouta Airport upon his return from Malaga, Spain. His detention follows a national search warrant issued in connection with an investigation into alleged electoral fraud during the September 23 legislative elections.
The investigation was triggered by the discovery of a bag containing irregular electoral ballots near a polling station at Al Qods school in the Kasabarata district. This incident has led to the arrest of five individuals, including two polling station presidents and their deputies.
In response to the irregularities observed in two polling stations within the Tangier-Asilah constituency, the Moroccan Ministry of the Interior has dispatched a central inspection commission to conduct an administrative investigation and establish legal responsibilities.
Laymouri has denied allegations that his travel to Spain was an attempt to evade justice, maintaining that the trip was pre-planned for professional and personal reasons and that he was unaware of any search warrant prior to his departure.
