Tangshan 1976 earthquake commemorated on 50th anniversary

China is preparing nationwide commemorations for the 50th anniversary of the 1976 Tangshan earthquake, the deadliest quake of the 20th century. The magnitude‑7.5 quake struck at 03:42 on 28 July, collapsing about 85 % of the city's buildings and killing an estimated 700 000 people, with early reports citing 650 000 deaths and later official figures at 246 000.

The disaster caused massive secondary effects, including a 7.1 aftershock, fires, disease outbreaks such as typhus and dysentery, and crippled transport and communication networks. Rescue efforts involved 100 000 soldiers, 30 000 medical personnel, and volunteers, while Western aid offers were rejected by the communist leadership.

Marking the half‑century milestone, Chinese authorities are organizing memorial events and exhibitions to recall the tragedy and its lessons for seismic preparedness.
