Tanzania issues warnings ahead of expected El Nino rains
Authorities and religious leaders in Tanzania are issuing warnings and preparedness guidelines ahead of expected El Nino rains between October and December 2026. The Tanzania Meteorological Authority (TMA) has forecasted above-average rainfall for several regions, including the Northern Coastal Belt, Southern Highlands, Lake Victoria Zone, and parts of Kigoma.
The Evangelical Lutheran Church in Tanzania (KKKT) has developed a guide for pastors to educate congregants on potential risks such as flooding, waterborne diseases, and disruptions to agriculture, tourism, and transport. Bishop Alex G. Malasusa urged the public to remain calm and strictly follow official government and TMA instructions.
In the Kilimanjaro region, CCM Chairman Patrick Boi Safi has called on residents to clear drainage systems and ditches to prevent flooding. He specifically advised those living in low-lying areas to be prepared to evacuate if directed by authorities. Additionally, citizens have been encouraged to secure food reserves by storing harvested crops like maize and beans to mitigate potential shortages during the rainy period.
