Tanzania's First Gentleman Hafidh Ameir Hassan dies

Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday while receiving treatment for a heart-related illness at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. He was 80 years old.

Tanzanian Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi announced the death, noting that burial arrangements are being made in the family’s native Zanzibar. Hassan, who became the country’s first female president in 2021, is survived by two widows, four children, and 15 grandchildren.

Regional leaders have expressed condolences, including Namibian President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah and Kenyan President William Ruto. Ruto described the deceased as a ‘distinguished son of Tanzania’ and a beloved father.
