Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan, died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at the Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar. He had been receiving treatment for a heart condition.

Ameir, an agricultural academic, became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in 2021. While initial reports estimated his age at 76, subsequent reports stated he was 80 years old. He was survived by his family, including children and grandchildren.

Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi officially announced the death. Regional leaders, including the presidents of Kenya, Zambia, Burundi, and Namibia, issued messages of condolence. Kenyan President William Ruto described the deceased as a ‘distinguished son of Tanzania’.
