Taormina wildfires threaten homes and close A18 motorway
A large-scale wildfire in the Mastrissa area, near Taormina and Giardini Naxos, has caused significant disruption and threatened residential areas. The fire, which originated near the edge of the A18 Messina-Catania motorway, spread rapidly into surrounding vegetation and moved toward the Rossello zone.
Emergency response efforts include the Fire Brigade, Forestry Corps, Civil Protection, and local police. Aerial support via helicopters equipped with water buckets has been deployed to combat the flames, which have been exacerbated by strong winds. Due to the proximity of the fire to homes, authorities have issued alerts to residents and prepared for potential evacuations.
The A18 motorway has been closed in both directions, leading to heavy traffic congestion and long queues. Taormina Mayor Cateno De Luca described the situation as “tragic” and an “inferno,” noting that crews are working urgently to protect approximately ten homes at risk. While the exact cause of the fire is under investigation, officials have not ruled out arson.
