Wildfires and motorway closures in Italy

Wildfires have caused significant disruptions and safety concerns across different regions of Italy.

In early August, a brush fire involving dry vegetation near Firmo in the Cosenza province led to the temporary closure of both directions of the A2 highway due to dense smoke and reduced visibility. Firefighters from Castrovillari worked to contain the blaze, which occurred amidst a broader pattern of fires in the Pollino National Park area.

Later in the month, a large wildfire in the Mastrissa area of Taormina threatened approximately ten homes. Emergency services, including forest rangers and aerial bucket helicopters, were deployed to combat the flames. Taormina Mayor Cateno De Luca described the situation as ‘a tragedy’ and ‘an inferno.’ The emergency prompted the closure of the A18 Messina-Catania motorway and led authorities to advise residents to prepare for potential evacuations.

Recent developments in the Mastrissa area, near Taormina and Giardini Naxos, indicate the fire spread rapidly from the edge of the A18 motorway toward the Rossello zone, exacerbated by strong winds. The Fire Brigade, Forestry Corps, Civil Protection, and local police are managing the response. While the exact cause remains under investigation, officials have not ruled out arson. The A18 remains closed in both directions, resulting in heavy traffic congestion and long queues.
