Taşova flower okra becomes vital economic lifeline in Amasya

In the Taşova district of Amasya, the production of geographically indicated flower okra has become a vital economic lifeline for local residents. Known locally as ‘yellow gold’ due to its yellow flower color and high market value, the dried okra is currently selling for approximately 1,400 TL per kilogram.

The production cycle lasts about four months, involving a labor-intensive process where workers harvest the small okra with their flowers intact in the early mornings. The okra is then manually threaded onto strings with needles to dry naturally. This process often involves community cooperation, with neighbors working together to complete the task.

Total production for the province is expected to reach approximately 2,500 tons this year. Local producers report high demand, noting that buyers often arrive at their doors even late at night to purchase the product. For many families in the region, the income generated from the okra harvest is used to cover essential living expenses and educational costs for children.
