Amasya flower okra agricultural production
Overview
The production of geographically indicated flower okra in the Taşova district of Amasya has become a significant economic driver for local residents. Known as ‘yellow gold’, the labor-intensive harvest involves collecting small okra with their flowers intact in the early morning and manually threading them onto strings to dry naturally.
As the season progresses, the high market value of the product has led to significant price points. While dried okra was initially reported at approximately 1,400 TL per kilogram, later reports indicate prices for the dried variety have reached 3,000 TL per kilogram, with fresh okra priced at 300 TL per kilogram. Due to these costs, consumers often purchase the dried version in small increments of 100 or 200 grams.
Total production for the province is expected to reach approximately 2,500 tons this year. The okra is highly regarded in the region, sometimes referred to as ‘Hızır’ın cebinden düşen bamya’ (okra fallen from Hızır’s pocket), and is used in various ceremonies and religious gatherings in regions such as Konya and Kayseri.
