TAP Air Portugal: Air France-KLM and Lufthansa submit final privatization bids

Air France-KLM and Lufthansa have submitted their final, improved binding proposals for the privatization of TAP Air Portugal. The competing airline groups are bidding for a stake of up to 49.9% of the Portuguese flag carrier, with 5% of the capital reserved for employees.

Parpública, the state-owned entity managing government holdings, has confirmed receipt of these final offers. The agency will now prepare a descriptive report assessing the absolute merit of the improvements presented by both candidates. This report will be forwarded to the Portuguese government's finance and air transport ministers for review.

The evaluation process will not be based solely on the financial offer. The government will consider several strategic pillars, including the robustness of the industrial project, the development of the Lisbon hub and route networks, planned investments in fleet and maintenance, the use of sustainable aviation fuels, and adherence to labor commitments.

Air France-KLM has proposed making Lisbon its exclusive Southern European hub, emphasizing transatlantic connectivity, particularly with Brazil. Lufthansa has highlighted its extensive experience in developing network airlines as a key strength for supporting TAP's growth and competitiveness. The Portuguese government is expected to make a final decision by mid-October, following a 15-day evaluation period.
