Taranto 2026 Mediterranean Games receive €15 million funding boost as team sport groups are drawn

The organizing committee for the XX Mediterranean Games in Taranto held the draw for the five team‑sport tournaments – water polo, football, handball, volleyball and 3×3 basketball – mapping the competitions that will take place from 21 August to 3 September 2026 across Taranto and 20 surrounding municipalities. More than 4,000 athletes from 26 nations will compete in 33 disciplines, with 3×3 basketball attracting 29 male and female teams.

The Italian government approved an additional €15 million for infrastructure works, raising the dedicated budget to €281.5 million and pushing total investment for the event beyond €350 million. The funds, proposed by Minister for European Affairs Tommaso Foti, will be allocated by extraordinary commissioner Massimo Ferrarese, who together with local mayor Pietro Bitetti will fast‑track construction and urban‑renewal projects. Officials highlighted the strategic importance of the Games for Italy and the lasting legacy for the Apulia region.
