Taranto ex-Ilva closure sparks worker protests and calls for job protections
The Court of Appeal in Milan ordered the hot section of the former Ilva steel plant in Taranto to be shut down within 90 days. The ruling has triggered a wave of protests, with around 20,000 direct and indirect workers blocking the state highway near the plant and demanding urgent government measures. Trade unions and political groups, including Fiom, the Fronte Comunista, the FGC and Socialismo XXI, are pressing for immediate income safeguards, job‑retention plans and a transition to cleaner production technologies.
Interest from potential investors has also surfaced: Jindal has signaled a willingness to acquire the hot area and proposes building an electric furnace with public funding, while Arvedi is interested only in the cold area. The groups argue that the plant has caused severe environmental contamination and health problems for workers and residents, and they call for a special law to protect incomes, fund site remediation and create new employment opportunities. A meeting with the Italian government is scheduled for 4 August at Palazzo Chigi to discuss the transition and extraordinary measures for the workforce.
