Taranto ex-Ilva steel plant to cut output and seek state aid for electric furnace transition

Regional President Antonio Decaro called for a reduction of the ex‑Ilva steel plant’s production from 6 million tonnes to between 2 and 3 million tonnes to comply with the Milan Court of Appeal’s environmental limits. He urged a stronger state role in the plant’s conversion to electric furnaces, echoing the demand of Democratic Party secretary Elly Schlein.

Decaro criticised the secret presentation of a decarbonisation dossier on 3 August, which was done without the region, the ministry or the Ministry for Business and Made‑in‑Italy. He stressed that the court ruling protects Taranto’s citizens and that suspending the decision is not an option, while calling for the Prime Minister’s direct involvement in what he described as the country’s worst industrial, employment and environmental crisis.
