Taranto political dispute over 482 million euro fund allocation

A political dispute has emerged in Taranto regarding the allocation of 482 million euros from the Just Transition Fund (JTF). The Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (AVS) party is contesting the decision to direct these funds toward an energy project that has already received benefits through the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) framework.

Rosa D’Amato, regional commissioner for Europa Verde/AVS, and spokesperson Giovanni Carbotti argue that the JTF resources and IPCEI funds should have been additive rather than substitutive. They claim that using a significant portion of the JTF to cover a project already supported by IPCEI reduces the total resources available for Taranto’s economic diversification and job protection.

This stands in contrast to statements by Fratelli d’Italia deputy Dario Iaia, who suggested that without this allocation, the resources might have been lost. AVS is demanding clarification on which funds were at risk and maintains that the current decision limits the ability to finance other economic and employment initiatives essential for the Ionian territory's transition.
