Taranto political disputes over industrial and economic aid
Overview
Political tensions in Taranto have centered on the management of industrial resources and economic transition funds. Initially, disputes emerged regarding the ex Ilva steel plant, where local officials were accused of blocking a government proposal to use an offshore gas tanker to ensure energy continuity.
Conflict subsequently shifted to the allocation of 482 million euros from the Just Transition Fund (JTF). The Alleanza Verdi e Sinistra (AVS) party contested the decision to direct these funds toward an energy project already supported by the Important Projects of Common European Interest (IPCEI) framework. AVS representatives, including regional commissioner Rosa D’Amato and spokesperson Giovanni Carbotti, argued that using JTF resources as a substitute for, rather than an addition to, IPCEI funds reduces the total capital available for economic diversification and job protection in the Ionian territory. Conversely, members of Fratelli d’Italia, such as deputy Dario Iaia, suggested that the allocation was necessary to prevent the loss of these resources.
More recently, members of the Five Star Movement (M5S) and the Democratic Party (PD) have accused the Meloni government of defunding decarbonization efforts for the former Ilva steel plant. Critics claim the budget law effectively cancels 720 million euros previously earmarked for industrial transformation, including 498.8 million euros for the 2027–2029 period and 221.8 million euros starting in 2030. M5S Vice President Mario Turco described the move as a failure of industrial strategy, alleging that funds intended for decarbonization under decree-law 107 have been redirected to a general fund for business incentives.
