Taranto prepares for 2026 Mediterranean Games with new infrastructure

The city of Taranto and the municipality of Crispiano are preparing for the XX Mediterranean Games, scheduled from August 21 to September 3, 2026. The event is expected to host over 4,000 athletes from 26 nations.

In Crispiano, the administration is focusing on the long-term utility of new sports infrastructure. A specialized archery facility in the San Simone area, the only one of its kind in Southern Italy, has been constructed specifically for the Games. Mayor Luca Lopomo stated that the goal is to transform the site into a permanent regional hub for national and international federations to conduct training and competitions, thereby driving tourism and economic development.

Cultural celebrations are also planned to mark the inauguration. On August 20, Taranto will host the ‘Midnight Song,’ an event featuring an archaeological tour of the Tomb of the Athletes accompanied by harp performances, intended to connect the city’s ancient Greek heritage with the modern sporting spirit.
