Taranto promotes blue economy through maritime candidacy and offshore wind initiatives
The city of Taranto has submitted a new candidacy for the title of ‘Italian Capital of the Sea 2027’ with the project ‘Taranto due mari, un futuro – Laboratorio mediterraneo della blue economy’. This follows a previous attempt for the 2026 edition, which was awarded to Ravenna. The new proposal focuses on the blue economy, offshore wind energy, the historical Mediterranean narrative through MArTa, maritime trades, and local gastronomic excellence.
In a related development for the region's energy sector, Taranto will host the third edition of the ‘Offshore Wind Revolution’ (OWR) from October 7 to 9. Organized by Magellan Circle in collaboration with the Ionian Sea System Port Authority and the Puglia Region, the event aims to facilitate technical discussion and networking among international operators. Puglia is a significant hub for this sector, with 31 offshore wind projects currently requesting grid connection, representing over 23 GW of capacity. Proponents suggest that investment in floating offshore wind could generate significant economic returns across manufacturing, logistics, and shipbuilding.
