Taranto ramps up infrastructure ahead of 2026 Mediterranean Games

Local officials say the 2026 Mediterranean Games in Taranto are a catalyst for long‑term development. Walter Fischetti, head of the Airport Committee, stressed that the event should trigger sustained investment in transport, particularly a modern railway network and full use of the Marcello Arlotta airport, to boost tourism, attract capital and create jobs.

A coordination visit by the International Committee of Mediterranean Games (CIJM) took place 40 days before the opening ceremony. Delegates reviewed construction schedules for the Erasmo Iacovone stadium and the Torre d’Ayala water centre, noting very tight deadlines. The aquatic centre’s opening was moved to 30 July with a test event on 8‑9 August, while the stadium will be handed over on 1 August. Athlete accommodation will be provided on two cruise ships arriving mid‑August, and a Village will operate from 18 August to 5 September. About 3 000 volunteers have been accredited and training is underway, and a fleet of 300 vehicles has begun delivery. The organising committee committed to establishing a Main Operations Centre within two weeks to manage emergencies and overall coordination.
