Taranto readies for 2026 Mediterranean Games with 498 Italian athletes

The 2026 Mediterranean Games will take place in Taranto, Italy from 21 August to 3 September. Italy has confirmed a delegation of 498 athletes – 259 men and 239 women – competing across all sports, with athletics providing the largest contingent of 82 participants.

Boxer Irma Testa and sprinter Filippo Tortu have been named the flag bearers for the Italian team at the opening ceremony, which will be held at the Erasmo Iacovone stadium. President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are scheduled to attend, underscoring the event’s national significance. Sports Minister Andrea Abodi described the ceremony as a “memorable show” and highlighted its geopolitical relevance.

The government has allocated more than €350 million for Games infrastructure. New facilities include the renovated Erasmo Iacovone stadium, a new PalaRicciardi arena and Olympic‑standard swimming pools, all intended to leave a lasting legacy for the region.
